Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman made headlines by netting twice during Arsenal's 4-2 League Cup triumph over Ipswich Town, playing the entire duration of the match. The youngster opened his account through an elusive individual dash past grounded defenders before adding a composed low finish into the corner.
This standout display made him merely the second player at age 16 representing a Premier League squad to strike twice in a single contest across all tournaments, matching Wayne Rooney's 2002 milestone for Everton against Wrexham. Despite the teenager's heroics at Portman Road, manager Mikel Arteta emphasized the necessity of patience and measured handling rather than rushing the attacker's trajectory, even as midfielder Mikel Merino hailed his enormous potential and pundit Jamie Redknapp praised his elite quality.
Dowman's recent outing comes after a record-setting prior year in which he became the youngest participant in Champions League history at 15, while also claiming milestones as Arsenal's and the Premier League's youngest starter, goalscorer, and champion across 13 appearances. His breakaway strike into an empty net versus Everton, leaving Jordan Pickford stranded, even earned Arsenal's goal of the campaign while he completed his GCSE studies at Brentwood School before departing full-time into athletics.
Breaking into the senior lineup remains challenging, as the Gunners have begun the term with seven consecutive victories across four competitions, relying on a consistent frontline featuring Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz while Dowman spent four fixtures on the bench and missed two entirely.
