Suresh Raina has hinted that Mohammed Shami could soon rejoin India’s bowling attack, following Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s impressive recall to the national team at age 36. Raina praised Kumar’s disciplined approach and fitness regimen, crediting them for his return, and suggested Shami—who has also maintained his domestic form—could be next.
Shami’s last international appearance came during the 2025 Champions Trophy, with his most recent Test outing in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. Since then, he has focused on domestic cricket, including an upcoming Ranji Trophy season for Bengal, though his IPL numbers have raised concerns, with just 18 wickets at an economy rate of 10 over 22 matches in 2025 and 2026.
Kumar’s own comeback has been marked by precision and adaptability, particularly in the IPL, where he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in 2026 with 28 scalps at an economy of 8.07. His ability to swing the ball and execute variations in critical phases—claiming 25 wickets in the PowerPlay and 18 in the death overs—proved decisive in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s back-to-back title wins.
Raina’s optimism for Shami rests on his domestic performances, implying that if Kumar’s experience and control can earn a spot, Shami’s proven track record could follow closely behind.
