The NFL is reportedly preparing to close a regulatory loophole that several organizations have utilized over the previous couple of weeks. Ambiguity within league guidelines regarding the necessity of a kicking tee has allowed franchises to deploy a twelfth man onto the field to stabilize the football during kickoffs.
In their Week 2 victory against the Titans, the Eagles notably utilized punter Braden Mann to hold the ball for kicker Jake Elliott. This tactical approach was designed to facilitate a low knuckleball kick that proves challenging for opponents to field.
Although the dynamic kickoff rules introduced in 2024 permit an extra player solely as a holder during windy weather or when the ball fails to stay on the tee, the wording regarding tees created an opening that the league is now expected to address.
