Phil Mickelson’s legacy has long been a subject of debate, but a new perspective from his longtime coach Butch Harmon reveals a side of the six-time major champion that many may have overlooked. Harmon, who worked with Mickelson during his peak years, described the golfer as the most generous player he ever coached.
One standout moment came after Mickelson won the 2004 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, a tournament he had previously dismissed as unsuitable for his game. Despite finishing in the top three in the three events leading up to the win, Mickelson was stunned by his victory.
As Harmon prepared to leave the course, Mickelson called him back to the clubhouse and presented him with a $100,000 check—a gesture Harmon called ‘the most amazing thing that’s ever happened’ as a coach. The generosity extended beyond that moment; Mickelson also invited Harmon to the Butler Cabin at Augusta National after winning the 2010 Masters, a rare honor that Harmon had never received from another major winner, including Tiger Woods, despite his long-standing relationship with the sport’s elite.
