Former India opener Aakash Chopra has criticized the selection committee for excluding Ravindra Jadeja from the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, despite earlier assurances about his role in the team’s future. Jadeja, who was part of the squad for the first three ODIs against the West Indies but dropped for the final match, has now been left out of all five games against New Zealand, with Axar Patel taking his place as the preferred left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder.
Chopra highlighted the inconsistency between the team’s public statements about Jadeja’s importance—including his inclusion in plans for the 2027 World Cup—and his repeated omission from the playing XI, suggesting the selectors may have already decided against retaining him for the tournament.
Chopra also questioned the exclusion of left-arm spinner Manav Suthar from India’s Test squad for the two-match series against New Zealand, despite his strong debut performances. Suthar, who took 23 wickets in his first three international matches and was named Player of the Match in his first game, had been India’s leading bowler during their recent tour of Sri Lanka.
His omission, Chopra argued, further underscores the selection committee’s apparent shift away from experienced players in favor of younger alternatives.
