Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down from his position leading Sri Lanka in the longest format, noting that leadership duties should transition to younger athletes. The thirty-five-year-old informed the Selection Committee of his choice to relinquish the captaincy while remaining available for national selection as a competitor.
Having taken charge in January 2024 as the eighteenth Test leader of his country, he finished his tenure with seven victories and eight losses across eighteen matches.
Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed the departure through an official media announcement, with CEO Ashley de Silva extending gratitude for his service. The organization has not yet announced a successor to fill the role before the upcoming two-match series against Pakistan scheduled for November.
That upcoming assignment will feature opening action hosted at Rawalpindi, followed by the second fixture staged in Lahore.
