‘LIV is in such a state of flux': Rory McIlroy defends tour's new anti-LIV rule

Rory McIlroy addressed the DP World Tour’s controversial decision to exclude LIV Golf players from its 2027 schedule during a press conference ahead of this week’s DP World India Championship. The move, announced just days prior, bars any golfer who joins LIV’s second iteration next year from competing in DP World Tour events, including eligibility for the 2027 European Ryder Cup.

McIlroy defended the tour’s authority to enforce the rule, framing it as a necessary step to safeguard the DP World Tour’s future and emphasizing that players must adhere to the tour’s regulations as part of their membership, much like the PGA Tour’s structure. The ban could force LIV players to choose between the two circuits, potentially accelerating the upstart league’s decline following recent defections, including Jon Rahm’s departure from LIV earlier this month.
