Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan has suggested that MS Dhoni could return to the IPL for the 2027 season, despite missing the entire 2026 campaign due to injury concerns. The 45-year-old captain did not take the field in any of CSK’s 14 matches last season, a first in his IPL career, as the team finished eighth in the standings.
Viswanathan hinted at Dhoni’s potential comeback, stating that the veteran remains engaged with the franchise and that his decision will be shared upon his arrival in Chennai. The team’s former head coach, Stephen Fleming, praised Dhoni’s off-field influence, noting his role in mentoring younger players and maintaining team continuity, even without playing.
Meanwhile, former CSK batter Suresh Raina publicly urged Dhoni to return, citing the team’s improved form and fan demand for his presence. Raina revealed that Dhoni responded positively to the idea, leaving open the possibility of a comeback next season.
Sanju Samson, who joined CSK from Rajasthan Royals mid-season, provided stability with 477 runs across all 14 matches, though the team’s playoff hopes remained out of reach for the third consecutive year.
