World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz faced an unexpected setback at the 2026 Shanghai Masters, exiting in the third round after a 1–2 defeat to Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs.
The Spaniard, who had entered the tournament aiming to finish the season strongly, expressed frustration over inconsistent ball bounces during the match, describing how the surface’s unpredictable behavior disrupted his rhythm. Despite acknowledging Bergs’ sharp play—including several fortunate shots that kept rallies alive—Alcaraz insisted he was not blaming the court conditions, calling the experience unsettling rather than an excuse.
The loss marks another early exit for Alcaraz in a Masters 1000 event, following his breakthrough years, as he now turns his focus to the upcoming Paris Masters and the year-end ATP Finals campaign. With the season nearing its end, the Spaniard’s ability to adapt to varying surfaces will be tested once more in October.
