Following Mohammed Shami's decision to conclude his thirteen-year red-ball career, Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla expressed disappointment that the veteran fast bowler could not orchestrate a return to the national team before hanging up his boots. Shami accumulated 229 wickets across 64 Test matches during his international tenure, featuring six five-wicket performances, with his final appearance occurring in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia.
Despite stepping away from the international arena, the thirty-six-year-old maintained a heavy workload in domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy for Bengal. Shukla lauded that extraordinary dedication, noting that it is rare for an established international star to pour such immense effort into domestic fixtures for their state side.
