Former professional basketball player Candice Wiggins retired from the WNBA in 2016 after an eight-season career. The former Stanford standout, who was selected third overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2008 draft, alleged that her time in the league was marred by bullying and social exclusion due to her heterosexual identity.
Wiggins, a 2011 league champion and former Sixth Woman of the Year, claimed this environment forced her early exit from the sport. Although she later clarified that her assertion regarding the sexual orientation of 98 percent of the league was a personal estimation of her own feelings of isolation, her comments prompted significant debate regarding the culture of the WNBA.
Wiggins maintained that speaking out was a necessary step despite the subsequent backlash.
