Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has publicly shared his battle with alcohol addiction, detailing a 26-day stay at a rehabilitation center that marked a turning point in his life. The 36-year-old, known for his energetic on-field persona and record-breaking IPL wicket tally, revealed that his struggles intensified following his divorce in March 2025.
Chahal admitted that excessive drinking began during his early IPL years, fueled by social pressures and a lack of balance, but spiraled further after personal turmoil. His physical and mental health deteriorated, including severe anxiety that even affected his ability to speak, prompting him to seek professional help after a particularly difficult year of county cricket.
The rehab experience, he said, restored his emotional stability and physical fitness, allowing him to return to peak form during the last IPL season, where he felt rejuvenated at 30 despite his age. Chahal also acknowledged the public scrutiny that followed his personal struggles, which he said impacted his cricket performance, including a notable absence from T20 matches during that period.
