The WNBA will launch a dedicated replay center for the 2027 season, marking a major upgrade to officiating technology across the league. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the initiative during her annual pre-Finals press conference, revealing that the league has already renovated the NBA’s replay facility in Secaucus, New Jersey, and is now integrating the system into all 15 WNBA arenas.
Engelbert framed the investment—a multi-million-dollar commitment—as a response to long-standing concerns about officiating consistency, including high-profile missteps like the controversial end of Game 2 of the 2026 WNBA semifinals, where Breanna Stewart clashed with referees over a call. The move follows the league’s formation of a state-of-the-game task force last offseason to modernize refereeing standards, though complaints persisted through the 2026 campaign.
Engelbert, who announced her retirement earlier this year, will oversee the transition before stepping down by year’s end, leaving behind a legacy that includes this operational overhaul aimed at improving accuracy and efficiency in calls.
