Why the 49ers likely won’t shadow Jaxon Smith Njigba

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to face Seattle Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who has recorded 32 receptions for 481 yards and six touchdowns across four games this season. Despite his production, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris indicated the team will not utilize a shadow coverage strategy against him.

Morris explained that modern offensive schemes move receivers across the field, making traditional man-to-man shadowing impractical compared to historical defensive tactics. While Deommodore Lenoir will see time matched up against Smith-Njigba, the 49ers plan to maintain their broader defensive system rather than assigning a single defender to follow the receiver everywhere.
