Why Texas A&M is 'paying the price' for loyalty this season

Texas A&M football finds itself at a critical juncture this season, with its once-dominant offense failing to deliver under new leadership. The Aggies, now ranked No.

55 in the latest USA TODAY Re-Rank after dropping 13 spots, enter a pivotal moment against The Citadel with a 3-3 record. Head coach Mike Elko faces mounting pressure to revamp the struggling offense and restore confidence before a challenging SEC schedule, including a trip to face Alabama.

The team’s early-season struggles have raised questions about key players, including quarterback Marcel Reed, whose performance has fallen short of expectations. With personnel decisions looming and a Texas Bowl matchup against Kansas State—coached by former offensive coordinator Collin Klein—on the horizon, Elko must address both offensive and defensive shortcomings to avoid further decline.

The program’s future hinges on whether the coaching staff can adapt quickly or if deeper changes, including at the quarterback position, become necessary.
