Mississippi State’s star quarterback Kamario Taylor will miss Saturday’s showdown against LSU after aggravating a right foot injury sustained in last week’s loss to Alabama. Taylor, a sophomore who has thrown for 1,450 yards and 17 touchdowns while also rushing for 159 yards and a score this season, exited the Alabama game with a boot on his foot and was later ruled out for the LSU matchup.
His absence leaves the Bulldogs relying on backup quarterback Billy Puckett, a walk-on from Madison, Mississippi, who has seen limited action this year but will start in place of Appalachian State transfer AJ Swann. Puckett, who played as the scout-team quarterback last season, has completed 8 of 14 passes for 89 yards and added 24 rushing yards without turnovers or touchdowns in his brief collegiate career.
With Taylor’s dynamic play removed from the equation, Mississippi State enters the game as heavy underdogs despite a 4-1 record and a better ranking, facing LSU in a contest where the Tigers are favored by multiple touchdowns. The Bulldogs, who can’t afford another early-season loss if they hope to secure a College Football Playoff berth, will need Puckett to deliver an unexpected performance to overcome the odds against a formidable opponent.
