Penn State’s hiring of Matt Campbell as James Franklin’s replacement has quickly become a point of scrutiny after a shaky start to his tenure. The Nittany Lions, who brought in Campbell to elevate their standing in the Big Ten, have instead stumbled out of the gate with back-to-back losses, including a humiliating home defeat to Wisconsin followed by a blowout at the hands of Northwestern.
Campbell’s first three games at Penn State stand at 3-2, a far cry from the high expectations tied to his decade-long success at Iowa State, where he became the program’s most winning coach and delivered notable upsets against top-ranked opponents. His career record of 110-72 (.604) includes just one 10-win season, though he has sent 10 teams to bowl games with a mixed postseason record of 5-5.
While Penn State’s eight-year contract gives Campbell time to turn things around, the early struggles have sparked comparisons to UCLA’s rocky launch under Bob Chesney, who was also considered for the Penn State job before ultimately being passed over in favor of Campbell.
