The Miami Hurricanes have a historic opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 for the first time since December 8, 2002, following a dramatic 43-35 double-overtime victory over Florida State.
The win came on a weekend where five of the top seven teams suffered losses, clearing the path for Miami to ascend to the top ranking. The Hurricanes, led by quarterback Darian Mensah (23/34, 326 yards, 3 TDs) and wide receiver Malachi Toney (11 catches, 154 yards, 2 TDs), secured the win with a 49% efficiency rate against Florida State’s 35%.
Toney also engineered a two-point conversion in the second overtime, while freshman running back Javian Mallory added 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald sealed the victory with an interception on the final play, ending Florida State’s late rally led by quarterback Ashton Daniels (75-yard TD pass to Duce Robinson with 2:39 left).
Miami’s last No. 1 ranking came during coach Larry Coker’s tenure, when the Hurricanes were defending their 2001 national title and had won 21 consecutive games as the top-ranked team.
That run ended in a 31-24 double-overtime loss to Ohio State in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Meanwhile, BYU’s rise to No.
8 presents a challenge, as the Cougars defeated No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24, with quarterback Bear Bachmeier (2 TDs, a 15-yard double-pass score, and a 6-yard TD pass) leading the charge.
BYU’s last No. 1 ranking dates back to 1984, when their national championship team topped the final poll.
The Cougars’ win came in their first top-10 matchup at LaVell Edwards Stadium, setting the stage for a potential leap past Miami in the rankings.
