What Daniil Medvedev’s China Open disqualification says about tennis officiating

Novak Djokovic advanced to the China Open final after his semifinal opponent, Daniil Medvedev, was disqualified during the second set. Leading 7-5, 5-3 and holding a 15-15 advantage in the game, Djokovic secured the victory when Medvedev struck a spectator in the face with a ball hit into the crowd in frustration.

Mohamed Lahyani, the chair umpire, consulted with a supervising official before officially defaulting Medvedev from the match. Medvedev later expressed remorse in a mixed zone and stated his intention to apologize directly to the injured fan.
