The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is narrowing down candidates to replace Ajit Agarkar as the senior men’s national selector, with former India opener Wasim Jaffer emerging as a frontrunner. Jaffer, who played 31 Tests and holds the Ranji Trophy record for most centuries and highest run-scorer, interviewed alongside Ramesh Powar, the former Indian women’s team coach, as part of the Cricket Advisory Committee’s selection process.
The vacancy follows Agarkar’s departure, reportedly due to disagreements over Rohit Sharma’s selection, leaving interim chief selector Pragyan Ojha in charge. With the BCCI preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa and the ongoing World Test Championship, the new appointment will influence talent identification and squad-building strategies.
Jaffer’s extensive Test experience—31 matches compared to Ojha’s 24—could also position him to challenge for the selection committee’s chairmanship under BCCI’s convention favoring the player with the most Test caps. The committee, currently including RP Singh, Ajay Ratra, and Shiv Sunder Das, will finalize the selection amid high stakes for India’s international future.
