Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin has announced that his 22nd NHL season will be his final campaign, marking the beginning of his farewell tour. The 41-year-old captain, who turned 41 in September, signed a one-year contract this summer and has spent his entire 18-year career with the Capitals, including a Stanley Cup victory in 2018.
Ovechkin, who holds the NHL’s career goal-scoring record after surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s mark in April 2025, reflected on the emotional decision, emphasizing gratitude for the game while acknowledging the right time to step away. The team has reinforced its roster with young talent, including Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, Boone Jenner, and Vincent Desharnais, aiming to push for another deep playoff run and a potential Stanley Cup push under Ovechkin’s leadership for one last season.
"Let’s make the playoffs and enjoy the moment," he said, highlighting the team’s strong foundation and his desire to leave on a high note.
