Exeter Chiefs lock Dafydd Jenkins believes the increasing number of Welsh rugby players competing in England’s Premiership can elevate the standard of rugby in Wales. Jenkins, 23, who has spent his entire senior career at Sandy Park, highlighted the impact of high-profile Welsh players like captain Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, who recently joined Gloucester from the Ospreys.
Their move has already contributed to Wales’ strong start in the United Rugby Championship, with Morgan and Lake featuring prominently in the team’s opening victory. Jenkins, who captained Wales at 21 during the 2024 Six Nations, noted that exposure to the competitive Premiership environment—including larger crowds and elite opposition—has sharpened the skills of Welsh players like himself, Morgan, and Lake.
He also emphasized the positive ripple effect, suggesting that the departures of established players create opportunities for younger Welsh talent to step up in the URC.
Jenkins, who led Exeter to a Premiership final appearance in June, recently underwent shoulder surgery following the club’s Twickenham defeat against Northampton Saints, where he scored a try. The injury forced him to miss Wales’ Nations Championship matches against South Africa, Argentina, and Fiji in July.
Despite the setback, Jenkins remains focused on his recovery, balancing rehabilitation with preparations for a pivotal year that includes the Rugby World Cup and potential honors with the Chiefs. He expressed gratitude for the support of Wales head coach Steve Tandy and the medical staff, who prioritized his long-term fitness ahead of the global tournament.
