According to Jaffer, the star batter appeared prepared for a tour of England before being informed by selectors that the team management intended to prioritize younger leadership and evaluate his position based on current performance.

This shift in expectations led Kohli to withdraw from the England series despite his earlier efforts to demonstrate commitment to the format, including a domestic appearance for Delhi in early 2025. Kohli ultimately concluded his 14-year Test career on May 12, 2025, having accumulated 9,230 runs and 30 centuries across 123 matches.
