Following a lopsided 41-13 defeat to Georgia, Oklahoma coach Brent Venables revealed that his staff debated pulling quarterback John Mateer at halftime. Mateer struggled mightily during the second quarter, handing over the ball on three consecutive possessions to help stake the Bulldogs to a commanding 28-0 advantage before the break.
Despite the turnovers, which included a pick-six by Chris Cole and two lost fumbles, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle noted that the coaching staff ultimately stuck with Mateer on their headset communications. Mateer defended his mental state after the blowout, stating that his processing remains quick even as the Sooners prepare to bounce back during their upcoming bye week.
