U.S. tennis sensation Coco Gauff has spoken out against a surge of racist abuse directed at her following a controversial moment during her China Open match.
The 19-year-old defeated 16-year-old Chinese player Sun Xinran in straight sets (7-5, 6-1) to advance to the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 event in Beijing. The victory came after Gauff requested a replay of a point when LED advertising boards flickered during a rally, sparking backlash from some fans.
She later addressed the online harassment on social media, calling the volume of racist comments she received 'insane' and emphasizing that she was simply following the rules of tennis. The incident has drawn widespread attention to the issue of racial abuse in professional sports, particularly in international competitions where cultural and linguistic barriers can amplify tensions.
