PGA Tour putting consultant Stephen Sweeney has introduced a straightforward yet effective method for amateur golfers to improve their green reading. In a recent episode of *The Lab*, Sweeney addressed a common issue among golfers—underestimating the break on putts—which often leads to missed opportunities, even with a technically sound stroke.
His approach involves dividing the putt into three equal segments, using ball marks to visualize the ideal path. By practicing and adjusting until the ball consistently rolls over these marks and into the hole, golfers can refine both their line selection and speed control.
Sweeney, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, also noted that many players tend to play too little break, a habit that can be corrected with targeted drills and self-assessment. The technique is designed to bridge the gap between visual green reading and the physical execution of the putt, offering a practical solution for amateurs looking to lower their scores.
