Title-chasing Somerset struggle at Yorkshire

Division One pacesetters Somerset endured a difficult beginning to their encounter at Headingley after being reduced to 68-5 by stumps, trailing Yorkshire by 144 runs. Seeking a first-ever championship crown amid a fierce five-point race with Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire, the visitors initially bowled well upon losing the toss, dismissing the hosts for 212.

Yorkshire had collapsed to 85-5 following early dismissals by Lewis Gregory, Jake Ball, and a Josh Thomas run-out, but recovered through an 83-run partnership between George Hill, who hit 45, and Jonny Bairstow, who led the scoring with 79 despite being shelled twice. Migael Pretorius quickly removed Hill and Dom Bess in consecutive balls before Yorkshire were eventually cleared away, with Gregory and Pretorius each claiming three wickets.

However, Somerset's reply crumbled rapidly under the pace of Ben Cliff, who achieved his maiden three-wicket haul in first-class cricket to leave the table-toppers reeling at 24-4. A brilliant one-handed slip grab from Hill aided the bowling attack, keeping Somerset on the back foot despite an unbeaten 17 from James Rew.

Facing Jack Leach earlier in the day had given Yorkshire some momentum, and Cliff's 3-31 ensured the home side closed day one firmly on top despite Bairstow's earlier counter-attacking efforts having laid the groundwork.
