Texas Tech QB Thomas Castellanos regains eligibility after judge grants injunction against NCAA

October 16, 2026

Texas Tech quarterback **Thomas Castellanos** has regained his eligibility after a Jefferson Circuit Court judge issued an injunction blocking the NCAA from enforcing its previous ruling. The decision comes just in time for the Red Raiders' upcoming matchup against Arizona State this Saturday, where Castellanos will now be available to contribute.

His eligibility had been suspended earlier this season after a Kentucky judge dissolved a temporary restraining order that had allowed him to return for a fifth year of eligibility. Castellanos, a former Florida State quarterback, had seen limited play in his first four games with Texas Tech this season, completing just four passes but rushing for 10 attempts, 44 yards, and two touchdowns—a glimpse of the mobility he could bring back to the offense if called upon.

The timing of Castellanos' return is particularly notable given the struggles of Texas Tech's starting quarterback, **Will Hammond**, who has faced significant challenges this season. Hammond completed only 58.6% of his passes in the team's last game, throwing three interceptions while managing just one touchdown.

The Red Raiders' offense has been stagnant under Hammond, averaging 406.4 yards per game and scoring a modest 34.8 points per contest—ranking 12th in the Big 12. With Castellanos back in the mix, Texas Tech may finally find the offensive spark it has been missing, especially if Hammond continues to face difficulties against Arizona State's defense.
