San Diego began their postseason journey in explosive fashion during the opening frame of the National League Wild Card Series on Tuesday night. Leadoff hitter Fernando Tatis Jr.
jumped on an initial pitch from Chicago starting pitcher Matthew Boyd to launch a deep drive into the left-center field bullpen, setting a franchise milestone for a postseason leadoff home run. Moments later, teammate Manny Machado followed suit by driving an outside changeup from Boyd into the left-field bleachers for a quick two-run advantage.
This early offensive outburst marked the first time the club has ever hit multiple home runs in the first inning of a playoff game.
