New York maintained its advantage over Boston as Game 2 reached the bottom of the sixth inning on Wednesday, though the lead had just been halved. Left-hander Garrett Crochet made his initial appearance since April 25, having missed time due to shoulder inflammation, and quickly retired Spencer Jones on a breaking pitch outside the strike zone.
Although the catcher failed to cleanly secure the delivery, Jones sprinted toward first base and reached safely following a review of the close play. Jones subsequently stole second base and advanced to third on an errant throw before teammate George Lombard Jr.
drove him home with a single. That hustle sparked the New York offense, which eventually loaded the bases and forced Crochet from the game.
Cody Bellinger later capped the productive frame by launching a three-run home run over the wall in right-center to extend the advantage to 7-1, ultimately securing a sweep-clinching victory.
