Prince William stepped onto the cricket field Tuesday outside Buckingham Palace for a high-profile friendly match, joining cricket legends Sourav Ganguly and Brian Lara alongside England stars Joe Root and James Anderson. The event, organized by YouTube creators the Backyard Cricket Boys, celebrated cricket’s cultural bond between Britain and India, with William batting for around 10 minutes, smashing a six off Ganguly and attempting a few deliveries before mingling with fans.
The match served as a promotional prelude to next month’s Earthshot Prize ceremony in Mumbai, which William founded in 2020 to fund environmental innovation—this year’s edition will feature 15 finalists across five categories, with India chosen as the host due to its dominance among past winners. Root and Lara both praised William’s batting, suggesting he showed natural talent, while the prince also received a personalized cricket shirt for his daughter, Princess Charlotte, who plays for her school team.
The Princess of Wales is expected to accompany him to Mumbai, where the ceremony is set to be the largest yet, following her absence from recent editions due to health and family commitments.
