Somerset title hopes fade after defeat by Yorkshire

Somerset suffered a damaging blow to their aspirations of a maiden Division One crown as Yorkshire dismissed them for just 101 to seal an emphatic 185-run triumph at Headingley. Resuming the final morning at 73 for 3 in pursuit of 287, the visiting side collapsed entirely within 82 minutes, losing seven wickets for merely 28 runs.

Seamers Ben Coad (4-33) and Ben Cliff (3-41) wreaked havoc early, removing overnight batters Tom Lammonby for 32 and Tom Abell, before Coad had James Rew taken at slip. Cliff then had Craig Overton caught behind for five and trapped Lewis Gregory in front, giving the young quick remarkable match figures of 11 for 105—the 13th-best bowling haul in the county's history.

George Hill subsequently claimed the scalp of first-innings half-centurion Migael Pretorius, and Matthew Revis completed the rout by cleaning up Jake Ball before noon. The 19-point victory marked Yorkshire's fifth win in 13 matches, having earlier totaled 212 and 275 thanks to Hill's 89 and Dom Bess's 77, alongside Overton taking 3 for 44.

The loss drops Somerset, who took only three points, into second place and 11 points adrift of leaders Warwickshire heading into the final round against Surrey at Taunton, while third-contender Nottinghamshire prepare to host Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.
