Somerset title hopes fade after defeat by Yorkshire

Yorkshire dealt a crushing blow to Somerset's County Championship pursuit, wrapping up a comprehensive 185-run triumph inside 82 minutes on the final morning at Headingley. Tasked with an overall target of 287, the visitors resumed on 73-3 but disintegrated to 101 all out prior to midday.

Ben Cliff completed career-best match figures of 11-105—the 13th-highest return in Yorkshire's first-class annals—by taking 3-18 to complement his eight-wicket haul from the first innings, while Ben Coad claimed 4-33. Together, the opening pair dismantled the chase early, dismissing overnight pair Tom Lammonby for 32 and Tom Abell, followed swiftly by James Rew, Craig Overton, and Lewis Gregory.

George Hill then removed Migael Pretorius before Matthew Revis bowled Jake Ball to seal the 19 points to Somerset's three.

The setback, Somerset's third of the campaign and second against Yorkshire this summer, leaves them 11 points adrift of new Division One pacesetters Warwickshire heading into the ultimate round. Yorkshire, who posted scores of 212 and 275 behind Hill's 89 and Dom Bess's 77 against Overton's 3-44, secured their fifth win in 13 matches.

Somerset, still seeking their maiden championship crown, host Surrey at Taunton next week, while Yorkshire head to Trent Bridge to face another title contender, Nottinghamshire.
