India’s cricket leadership has reshuffled its squad ahead of the upcoming series against New Zealand, with key players adjusting their availability for the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Tests. Shubman Gill will captain the team in the first three ODIs before stepping aside to focus on the subsequent two Test matches, which are critical for India’s push to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
Gill’s absence from the final two ODIs will be filled by Shreyas Iyer, who will take over as captain for those matches. Meanwhile, KL Rahul will also miss the last two ODIs, leaving the door open for his participation in the Test series.
The BCCI has also confirmed Jasprit Bumrah’s return to the Test squad, marking his first appearance since India’s 2-0 series loss to South Africa last November. The ODI squad for the first three matches includes established stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Axar Patel, while the Test lineup features emerging talents such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padickar.
The series, originally scheduled for three ODIs, has been expanded to five matches, reflecting the popularity of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during their final tour of New Zealand. The Tests are set to begin in Wellington on November 19, with the ODIs kicking off on November 4 and concluding on November 15.
