India skipper Shubman Gill blazed his way into the record books during Wednesday's second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati. The opening batsman carved out the quickest double century in men's 50-over international history, reaching the milestone from just 117 deliveries.
This sensational knock eclipsed the previous benchmark held by fellow countryman Ishan Kishan, who needed 126 balls against Bangladesh in Chattogram three years prior. By securing this second career double ton, Gill joined Rohit Sharma as the only players in the format to achieve the feat multiple times.
Rohit currently holds the record with three such innings, while Gill's previous double century came against New Zealand in Hyderabad back in 2023. During the same match, Gill also notched his 11th ODI century off only 62 balls, surpassing Rohit's previous mark for the fastest fifty-over hundred by an Indian captain.
This rapid performance placed Gill as the third-fastest overall to reach 11 ODI centuries, trailing only Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock. His aggressive acceleration saw him add 56 runs from a mere 29 deliveries after reaching his half-century in 37 balls.
Facing pressure from opposing bowlers like Keemo Paul, Roston Chase, and Alzarri Joseph, Gill ultimately pushed a delivery from Vitel Lawes toward long-on to complete the historic single.
