Following a major series victory against Los Angeles, the San Diego Padres returned to Petco Park for an opening contest against Arizona that quickly turned into an eleven to four defeat. Pitcher Casey Mize struggled through four frames, giving up seven runs before being sidelined with an injury and seeing his earned run average climb to four point thirty-two.
Command issues plagued the bullpen as well, with pitchers issuing eight total walks, including bases-loaded walks by Kyle Hart and Jason Adam. Despite collecting ten hits compared to the Diamondbacks' eight, the home side failed to generate enough offense, though reserve player Sung-Mun Song went two-for-two after entering the game in the seventh inning.
San Diego now seeks a single victory to secure home-field advantage for the upcoming Wild Card round.
