Almost a year after a blockbuster trade sent star cornerback Sauce Gardner to Indianapolis, the high-priced deal is backfiring on the Colts. Despite giving up a hefty package of draft picks and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell to the New York Jets, general manager Chris Ballard has seen his team struggle to a dismal 3-9 record since the acquisition.
The defense has surrendered massive passing numbers and managed only one interception, while Gardner has failed to anchor the unit as anticipated.
Conversely, the Jets are reaping the rewards of the lopsided transaction. New York utilized one of the acquired first-round picks on rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq, who recently exploded for a stellar performance against Detroit, including a highlight-reel touchdown grab.
Meanwhile, Mitchell has emerged as a productive contributor in the New York passing attack when healthy, catching 33 passes for 424 yards in his ten appearances for the franchise.
