Harmanpreet Kaur has chosen to relinquish leadership duties across all three international formats for the Indian women's cricket team, departing as captain immediately following a review session on October 5, 2026. Reports indicate that board leadership and head coach Amol Muzumdar had proposed retaining her in charge for one-day and test fixtures, but she elected to vacate every leadership position simultaneously.
Mithali Raj's previous departure in 2022 had marked the beginning of Kaur's tenure as full-time test and ODI skipper, building upon her earlier appointment to lead the twenty-over side in 2016. Her decade-long leadership featured historic milestones, including guiding the squad to the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup championship in 2025 and securing consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games across 2023 and 2026.
The board has not disclosed any official rationale for her departure, and a successor has yet to be named while Kaur remains available to play for the national side.
