Red Sox lose Roman Anthony for wild-card series after ‘additional damage’ to wrist

Boston suffered a heavy 9-0 defeat in the opening game of their wild-card series and received further bad news regarding Roman Anthony. Manager Chad Tracy confirmed that the young outfielder aggravated a previous wrist injury, sustaining additional muscle damage that will sideline him for the remainder of the series and potentially longer if the team advances.

Jahmai Jones filled the leadoff designated hitter spot in the lineup for Wednesday's elimination matchup against Max Fried. Anthony initially exited Tuesday's contest after only two at-bats, having previously missed roughly four months of action due to a partially torn tendon in the joint.

Following the game, medical imaging in Boston revealed the extent of the fresh injury.
