Record prize fund for 2028 European Championships

The upcoming European Athletics Championships have unveiled a historic financial pool of approximately three million pounds for the 2028 edition held in Silesia, Poland. Under a newly overhauled reward system, financial payouts will be distributed down to the eighth-place finisher across all fifty contested disciplines, ensuring every leading competitor receives proper monetary backing.

Christian Milz highlighted that this massive financial boost emphasizes the organization's dedication to supporting competitors who drive the sport forward.

This substantial increase marks a complete departure from the previous competition format in Birmingham, which distributed a half-million euro pot strictly among the top ten overall performances determined through scoring tables rather than standard podium placements. With rising financial incentives across major athletics events worldwide, including a recent ten million dollar prize pot introduced by World Athletics, organizers are adjusting how they reward competitors.

The upcoming Silesia meet will get underway in early June, arriving just six weeks prior to the start of the Los Angeles Olympic Games.
