India made history by becoming the first men's T20 International team to reach 200 wins, securing a four-wicket victory over New Zealand at Hagley Oval. This win puts them 2-0 up in a five-match series, with three games remaining.
After New Zealand scored 180 for five, India's chase began with a 40-run opening stand by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. However, India collapsed to 70 for five, losing Samson, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sharma, Axar Patel, and Shreyas Iyer, with Naman Dhir scoring 31 off 17 balls before falling to Mitchell Santner.
New Zealand's total was bolstered by a 116-run partnership between Glenn Phillips, who hit 70 off 43, and Bevon Jacobs, who made 58 off 46. Earlier, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Prince Yadav had reduced the hosts to 41 for three in the Powerplay.
Michael Bracewell added a late flourish to reach 180. India's recovery was led by an unbeaten 69-run seventh-wicket stand between Tilak Varma, who remained 47 not out, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who hit 26 off 13 balls.
This partnership broke the previous Indian record of 63 runs set by Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya in 2019. Since 2006, India has won 200 of 300 T20Is, maintaining a 71.20% win rate among Full Member nations, with 83 losses and the rest ending in ties or no results.
The teams meet again in Wellington on October 27.
