During the September 26 matchup between Vanderbilt and Auburn, visiting quarterback Jared Curtis scrambled to the 29-yard line and slid out of bounds, inadvertently colliding with assistant coach Jerry Kill and knocking his headset loose. Vanderbilt's offensive drive later stalled at the 46-yard line, leading to an unsuccessful fake punt, while Auburn carried a 14-3 advantage into halftime built partly on a blocked punt touchdown and a field goal following an interception.
Making his initial SEC start, the five-star freshman completed 12 of 16 passes for 105 yards alongside 31 rushing yards on 11 attempts before intermission, throwing his only interception on a desperation heave at the conclusion of the second quarter.
