Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique expressed surprise at Manchester City’s guilty verdict in Premier League financial rule violations but urged the club to avoid sanctions. The independent investigation found City had operated outside regulations for nine years, using ‘sham’ contracts to funnel over £830 million into their operations between 2009 and 2018.
Despite the club’s appeal, Enrique acknowledged the process must run its course, though he praised City’s on-field achievements, including their recent trophy haul under Pep Guardiola. The Spanish coach, who is set to return to Etihad Stadium for the first time since leaving last season, also highlighted City’s deserved success, noting that trophies earned on the pitch should remain untouched by off-field decisions.
PSG, who face City in Wednesday’s Champions League clash, are owned by Qatar Sports Investment, while City’s ownership ties to Abu Dhabi’s ruling family date back to their 2008 acquisition for £200 million. Both clubs have faced financial penalties before, with PSG fined by UEFA in 2014 despite insisting they complied with regulations at the time.
