The Pittsburgh Panthers secured a narrow 35-33 victory against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday night to reach a 5-0 record, but the triumph came at a heavy cost. Sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel suffered a torn ACL during the third quarter and will miss the rest of the campaign, according to an update shared by Pete Thamel.
Before exiting the contest, Heintschel successfully threw 10 out of 18 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown. He finishes the year with 1,304 passing yards, 15 total touchdowns, and a single interception.
Following the injury, backup quarterback Holden Geriner stepped in to finish the game by completing 8 of 12 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. The Panthers now face a challenging stretch without their starting signal-caller, with upcoming matchups against Miami, North Carolina, and Louisville.
Head coach Pat Narduzzi and his squad must adapt quickly as they attempt to maintain their momentum in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
