The Carolina Panthers secured a 32-26 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, pushing themselves to 2-2 and into first place in the NFC South. What was billed as a tough test instead revealed deep vulnerabilities in Detroit's secondary, allowing Carolina to claim the lead right out of halftime and repel a late comeback attempt.
Carolina set the tone through the air early. Bryce Young connected on 15 of 20 passes for 178 yards and a score in the first half alone.
His primary target, Tetairoa McMillan, shredded coverage for 147 yards and a 32-yard touchdown on nine catches before the break. McMillan concluded his afternoon with 11 receptions, 162 yards, and two touchdowns, setting personal single-game bests after entering the contest with just 12 catches, 193 yards, and zero touchdowns on the season.
Detroit had battled back late in the second quarter. Following a 1-yard touchdown plunge from Jahmyr Gibbs, Ryan Fitzgerald struck the right upright on an extra-point attempt to leave points off the board.
Detroit then tied the game at 16-16 with a 41-yard Jake Bates field goal, set up when Jameson Williams caught a deep throw from Jared Goff. However, Carolina received the second-half kickoff and immediately answered.
McMillan hauled in a 10-yard touchdown to make it 22-16, and Chuba Hubbard later added a 15-yard touchdown to ensure the Panthers stayed out in front.
Despite Jared Goff finishing with 412 passing yards after a 153-yard opening half, Detroit's final drive stalled completely. Needing 87 yards with 2:06 left on the clock, the Lions turned the ball over on downs.
Goff took a 6-yard sack, overshot Sam LaPorta on third-and-13, and threw short to Isaac TeSlaa on fourth down. NBC commentator Cris Collinsworth labeled the series a disaster, remarking on Goff's choices under heavy pressure as the drive ended without a first down.
The defeat drops Detroit to 2-2, leaving them two games behind the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North race. The 32 points conceded represents the highest total through four games in Dan Campbell's tenure, with Kelvin Sheppard's defense statistically ranked as the worst in NFL history through a four-game start.
For Carolina, a 2-2 record places them atop their division, providing immediate reward for an aggressive offensive showing.
