During the 2025 trade deadline, the Baltimore Orioles completed a massive seven-player deal sending Ryan O'Hern and Ramon Laureano to San Diego in exchange for a five-prospect package assembled by Mike Elias. Among those acquired were infielder Cobb Hightower, pitcher Tyson Neighbors, towering left-hander Boston Bateman, alongside utility players Victor Figueroa and Brandon Butterworth.
Butterworth, originally drafted by the Padres in the twelfth round of 2024 out of NC State, arrived in Baltimore after maintaining a strong seventy-eighty-two OPS in High-A with one hundred fifty-five total bases. Analysts have highlighted his exceptional defensive capabilities, noting his rapid release, strong arm, and range across multiple positions including second base, shortstop, third base, left field, and center field.
Meanwhile, Laureano struggled following the trade before sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury in May, Hightower was limited to just eighteen contests prior to ACL surgery, and Neighbors struggled through an eight point eighty-two ERA across thirty-three minor league appearances.
