Notts' title chances dented by loss to Sussex

Sussex dealt a severe blow to Nottinghamshire's bid to retain their Division One crown by completing a seven-wicket triumph at the County Ground in Hove. After posting 240 and 358 in the initial frames with Tom Clark contributing 89 for the hosts, Nottinghamshire folded for 193 in their second outing as Ari Karvelas secured figures of 5-42 alongside two late dismissals by Jack Carson.

Chasing a modest target of 76, Sussex stumbled early when Olly Stone bowled Haines and Ben Hutton trapped Clark leg-before, but an unbeaten 38 from George Thomas helped shepherd the team over the line in 18 overs shortly following the lunch interval.

The 22-point haul gives Sussex six County Championship wins this year, moving them level with Somerset and table-topping Warwickshire despite navigating an opening 12-point sanction. Nottinghamshire, who collected just three points, must defeat Yorkshire in their concluding fixture while counting on Warwickshire to falter against Leicestershire to retain any silverware ambitions.
