The second-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish suffered a stunning 28–24 loss to No. 8 BYU in a top-10 showdown, but the game’s final moments have ignited a major controversy after the Big 12 Conference admitted a critical clock error cost the Irish their last chance to tie the game.
With four points separating the teams and just seconds remaining, Notre Dame’s quarterback CJ Carr completed a five-yard pass for a first down inside the BYU 10-yard line. After calling a timeout, Carr’s subsequent pass attempt fell incomplete, and the clock appeared to expire—prompting BYU’s celebration.
However, video review later revealed the clock had one second remaining when the ball hit the ground, meaning Notre Dame should have received an additional play under NCAA rules. The Big 12 confirmed the mistake in a statement, acknowledging the replay crew incorrectly allowed the game to end and announcing a review of officiating procedures ahead of upcoming matchups.
The revelation raises serious questions about whether the Cougars’ victory was legitimate or if Notre Dame was denied a final opportunity to force overtime.
