The NCAA Division I Cabinet has approved a significant adjustment to the college football transfer portal timeline, allowing student-athletes to enter the portal just days after the start of the new year. The portal will open for a 10-day window beginning on the first business day following January 1st, which means transfers can begin on Monday, January 4th.
This change comes despite the fact that some teams will still be competing in postseason games, including the College Football Playoff semifinals and championship. The playoff schedule includes three games on New Year’s Day—the Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Peach Bowl—while the semifinals are set for January 14th and 15th, with the national championship taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas around 10 days later.
The decision aims to provide earlier opportunities for players to explore new programs while balancing the demands of the postseason calendar.
