Ahead of their weekend contest, Michigan has been analyzing footage of Matt Campbell's former Iowa State teams, given that numerous players migrated alongside him to Penn State. Campbell spent a decade coaching the Cyclones from 2016 through 2025, compiling a 72-55 record, reaching seven bowls, and peaking in 2020 with a nine-win season and a Fiesta Bowl victory.
After taking over at Happy Valley in 2026, he brought twenty-four former players with him, including quarterback Rocco Becht, receiver Chase Sowell, running back Carson Hansen, offensive lineman Trevor Buhr, and safety Marcus Neal Jr.
Despite that influx of talent, those past schemes have not translated smoothly into the Big Ten. Penn State has stumbled to a 3-3 overall record and an 0-3 conference start, with several of those high-profile transfers struggling to recapture their previous form.
Michigan is dealing with an identical dilemma after building around a different Big 12 contingent, entering the matchup at 3-2 with a winless conference record and facing the threat of a third consecutive loss.
